Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and red cell distribution width: potential inflammatory markers for sudden sensorineural hearing loss

Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and red cell distribution width in sudden sensorineural hearing loss

Abstract

AimIn this study, we aimed to evaluate whether the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and red cell distribution width (RDW), which are accepted as novel indicators of inflammation, can be indicators for the evaluation of inflammation in sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL).MethodThe patient group consisted of patients diagnosed with SSHL in our clinic between January 2012 and September 2018. The control group consisted of participants with normal audiometry findings. Hematologic parameters were recorded, and NLR was calculated for statistical analysis.ResultsThis study included 169 volunteers aged 18-87 years. The mean age of the patients was 49.4 ± 15 years. There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of age. RDW was significantly higher in the study group compared with the control group. In addition, NLR was significantly higher in patients with SSHL compared with the control group.ConclusionIncreased NLR and RDW levels in SSHL, which are considered inflammatory markers involved in the etiology of many diseases, may indicate an inflammatory process underlying the disease. Considering treatment approaches targeting etiology, the importance of anti-inflammatory treatment should be considered.
