Abstract
AimPrimary dysmenorrhea is one of the most common complaints among women and is also the most common gynecological problem worldwide. This study aimed to determine which treatment is more effective in alleviating primary dysmenorrhea: pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy or diclofenac drugs. MethodFifty adult females with regular menstrual cycles of 21-35 days lasting 3-7 days and similar ordinary daily living activities participated in this study. Participants were recruited from students of the Faculty of Physical Therapy, Cairo University, Egypt. Group A received PEMF applied to the pelvic region three times per cycle for three consecutive cycles, 20 minutes per day. Group B received diclofenac tablets (50 mg) only at the onset of menstrual pain for three consecutive cycles. All participants were assessed by measuring blood progesterone levels, pain intensity using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and physical and psychological symptoms using a menstrual symptom questionnaire. ResultsThe present study revealed a statistically significant improvement (P < .05) in pain, physical and psychological symptoms associated with dysmenorrhea, and progesterone blood levels in Group A compared with Group B. ConclusionPEMF therapy was more effective than diclofenac drugs in relieving pain and associated symptoms of dysmenorrhea.Keywords
