Attention for fetomaternal and obstetric outcomes of advanced maternal age: a broad range clinical evaluation

Abstract

AimPregnancy ≥ 35 years may lead to different health problems in neonates. The present study was aimed to investigate the effect of pregnancy ≥ 35 on maternal and infant health.MethodsMothers of the neonates in our neonatal unit were separated into two groups and compared: Group I comprised those between 18 and 35 years old, and Group II comprised those ≥ 35. A total of 1,193 mothers were included: 22.1% (264) were above the age of 35 years, whereas 77.8% (929) were under the age of 35 years. Data collected included gender, number of previous deliveries, gestational week, neonatal mortality, polyhydramnios, oligohydramnios, gestational diabetes, cesarean delivery, preeclampsia, and meconium aspiration syndrome. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS v.18, and P < .05 was considered statistically significant. ResultsThere was no significant difference between groups regarding gender, number of previous deliveries, gestational week, neonatal mortality, polyhydramnios, or oligohydramnios. A statistically significant increase in gestational diabetes, cesarean delivery, meconium aspiration syndrome, and preeclampsia was observed in the advanced maternal age group. Hospitalization duration was also significantly longer in Group II.ConclusionPregnancy complications are more common in advanced maternal age. Close follow-up and referral of mothers ≥ 35 to experienced centers may reduce feto-maternal risks. Attention should be given to gestational diabetes and preeclampsia, and patients should be informed about possible risks associated with advanced maternal age.
